Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
