Multiple Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts A Delta Airlines Flight Landing at Sydney, Australia

Delta Airlines reported the aircraft experienced "brief rough air" as it landed at its destination.

Several people sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines flight from LA to Sydney experienced rough air on Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it landed at Sydney Airport, a company official stated. A number of the onboard staff were injured.

Local paramedics said they evaluated five individuals, and transferred a trio to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that comprised pain in the back and migraines. The injured ranged from their 30s to 70s.

It is the latest incident of planes experiencing turbulence, with aviation specialists pointing out that climate change is a major factor.

There were 245 passengers and a crew of 15 on the wide-body jet, the representative noted, adding that the plane arrived "without further incident" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on Friday.

Emergency responders reported they received a call just a mere three minutes ahead of the plane arrived, and response teams were waiting on the tarmac.

In the previous year, 25 people sustained injuries when another Delta jet, travelling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "considerable" rough air just 120 minutes into the transoceanic journey, and diverted for an unscheduled landing.

Recently, those on board on a Singapore Airlines jet endured a terrifying brief five-second of severe turbulence. One passenger lost their life and numerous people sustained injuries, as those without seatbelts rose out of their seats and were slammed back.

In-flight turbulence is not uncommon during flights, and while occurrences of significant turbulence appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.

Estimates show that there are an estimated five thousand cases of significant in-flight disturbance annually, out of a sum of more than 35 million journeys that are conducted around the world.

Intense turbulence is described as when the sudden jolts of a jet experiencing disturbed air apply greater than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - sufficient force to propel you from your seat if you were not fastened by a safety belt.

As global warming alters atmospheric conditions, researchers alert that air travel could become less smooth: shifts in temperature and shifting wind patterns in the upper atmosphere are projected to heighten the frequency and intensity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
