Conservative responses to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks raise serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, a segment of conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical binders of materials that included little new information.
