The former US president’s newest threat to enforce an extra complete levy on products from China has been described as a “classic case” of United States’ contradictory behavior, as stated by the China’s leadership.

A representative of the ministry also stated that the nation could introduce its own undisclosed “countermeasures” if the American leader executes his threat, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a potential trade conflict.

Last Friday, Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to reinforce its regulations for exports of critical elements, alleging China of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “under its control”.

Furthermore, he warned to withdraw from a planned meeting with Beijing’s head of state Xi, which was arranged for a conference in Seoul in the coming weeks.

The former president’s remarks on Friday unsettled stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 dropping 2.7%, marking its steepest fall since last spring.

These statements renewed fears of a trade war between the United States and China.

Earlier this year, the two sides had consented to eliminate high import duties on each other’s imports, which had created the possibility of bilateral trade stopping between the two countries.

As a result, American import duties on products from China facing an additional import tax compared with the start of the year, while US goods entering China incur a ten percent duty.

The most recent comments from China – published by the Ministry of Commerce in the form of written responses to press queries – reflected rhetoric from the zenith of the latest commercial tensions.

Officials denounced US export restrictions on electronic components while supporting Beijing’s export controls on key elements as “normal actions” to ensure national security and that of all nations.

The spokesperson stated that for “a long time”, the United States had “overstretched the concept of domestic safety, abused overseas sale restrictions and “enforced” biased policies against the Chinese nation.

“Turning to” trade levy ultimatums is not the proper method to engage with the Chinese government,” their representative commented.

“The nation’s view” on a tariff war has consistently been unchanging: we wish to avoid one, but we are not afraid of one.”

Recently, China announced it was strengthening foreign shipment restrictions on rare earths and additional substances vital for advanced tech manufacturing.

This move was regarded as a significant step, as the country processes about the vast majority of the global rare earth supply, which are used in items such as solar panels and handheld devices.

New remarks from both governments are being viewed by observers as a method of strengthening positions prior to future trade talks.

It is unclear whether a talks between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, planned at a conference in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks, will still proceed.
